Building affordable homes is our mission

Be First is a regeneration company, wholly owned by Barking and Dagenham Council. Our aim is to speed up the development of new homes in the borough, and to generate job and employment opportunities for local people.

Over the next four years Be First will be building up to 2,700 homes and around 80 per cent will be affordable.

We want to get residents engaged in the design of new homes and new communities because we passionately believe that residents’ involvement makes the community better.

Our Statement of Principles sets out how we expect to engage with everyone who is directly affected by our work.

Demolition work of Sebastian Court, an old 1960s block in Barking is now underway to make way for over 90 quality affordable homes for local people.

Leader of Barking and Dagenham Council, Cllr Darren Rodwell visited to see how the work is getting on. He said: “It’s great to see the demolition is underway because it’s another sign that we’re building on our record of providing homes for aspirational working-class residents.

“We are proud of our record of that we’re building up to 80 per cent of our homes at affordable prices for people on low incomes. This is among the highest in London.”

Consultation on the plans for the new development will commence in March and the final planning application is expected to be submitted to the council’s planning committee in the summer.
