Greening the Fiddlers is a community-led design project in Becontree Heath, Dagenham.

We aim to improve air quality and the health and wellbeing of people in the area through measures that create green and welcoming public spaces, and make it easier for people to move around by bike or on foot.

Over the past eighteen months, local residents, businesses, students and councillors have been sharing their ideas on how to improve the streets and spaces in this neighbourhood through numerous in-person and online events, led by local social enterprise Street Space. All of these comments have been incorporated into designs for five key areas, which address the issues and opportunities raised by residents over the course of the year.

Consultation is now closed.

The Mayor of London is supporting efforts to make The Fiddlers (Becontree Heath) a happier, healthier, and greener place through the Mayor’s Air Quality Fund. This is to make it easier for you to walk, wheel, and cycle.

As part of our works to make Stour Road and Althorne Way a greener, safer, more welcoming area we planted bee corridor beds and trees on Althorne Way, installed a parklet with bench seating, cycle parking and planting and painted an informal colourful crossing adjacent to the pupil entrance to William Bellamy Primary School.

The bee corridor planting was completed in early 2022 with some trees still to come in autumn 2022. The parklet and crossing works were installed in early March 2022 and a Cyclehoop Bikehangar providing secure storage for six cycles was installed May 28 at the base of Peverel House.

The project is drawing to a close and we want to hear your thoughts on the changes we have made.

As part of our works to make Becontree Avenue car park and shopping parade a greener, safer, more welcoming area we created more space for pedestrians, improved crossings points, installed additional cycle parking and places to sit and created new planted areas. We will return in the autumn to plant seven trees.

As part of our works to make Tenterden Road junction with Green Lane a greener, safer, more welcoming area we narrowed the junction and raised the surface making it level with the pavement, removed some parking spaces opposite the school entrance, installed new planters and bollards and added some cycle parking.

The changes to the road layout have been in place since Autumn 2021 with removal of pavement parking in February 2022 and installation of planters in March 2022. The project is drawing to a close and we want to hear your thoughts on the changes we have made.

As part of our works to make Stour Road adjacent to William Bellamy Primary School a greener, safer, more welcoming area we have installed an informal colourful crossing adjacent to the William Bellamy pupil entrance.

This informal colourful crossing is the first of its kind in Barking and Dagenham and is a pilot project. It is one of a range of measures we are introducing to make it safer and more enjoyable for children to get to school. We chose a colourful crossing because it’s more fun and will encourage the children to cross at the safest point, on this quiet residential road, in fact the design was chosen by pupils at William Bellamy school.

Your views and feedback are important to us. Please take a few minutes to complete the following questions to help us understand the impact of crossings like this and decide whether the crossing should remain permanently.

Completing the survey should take 5 minutes and as a thank you, you'll be given the opportunity to enter a prize draw where you could win £25 of shopping vouchers.
